If there’s one lesson life has taught me, it's this: you can only truly grow if you learn to protect your peace.
For a long time, I believed that a good heart was always saying yes, consistently being present, always giving people the benefit of the doubt. Kindness is beautiful, but too often, without having its bounds, kindness leads to burnout.
Setting boundaries isn’t about pushing people away. It’s about holding space for the people and experiences that really belong in your life.
I’ve learned that every “no” to something unhealthy just becomes a “yes” to something more promising. Sometimes, this means walking away from relationships that no longer align with your values. Perhaps other times, it means doing better by resting rather than burning out, honesty over people-pleasing, or solitude over settling.
Healing has served as a different teacher altogether.
Healing is not a place you get to one morning and walk away the next. It's the process. Some days you have enough strength to move mountains, and other days you are just plain proud of yourself for getting out of bed. Both days matter.
One of the greatest gifts that healing has given me is perspective. It has taught me that not every closed door is a loss. Not every ending is a punishment. Sometimes life removes what no longer fits so you can make room for what is always meant for you.
Growth will often feel uncomfortable, but it requires change. It calls on us to let go of old habits, outdated beliefs, and versions of ourselves we’ve outgrown. While change is scary, I have found that staying the same can be even scarier when you know you’re capable of becoming more.
But the most valuable lesson that I’ve learned is about understanding myself.
Knowing yourself involves knowing everything you value, what you’re here to do, what you’re good at, and even your weaknesses. It means acknowledging what makes you feel at peace and what quietly robs you of it. It means celebrating what is different about you instead of trying to fit in.
The more I know myself, the more secure I’ve become in my decisions. I do not need to explain every boundary, and I cannot ask for permission to practice my own good. Peace does not need an audience.
I’ve also learned that boundaries are not walls; they are doors with healthy locks. The right people wouldn’t take them personally. In fact, they will respect them — they’ll respect you because they respect you.
Today, I learn more about myself, healing, and growing than I ever did, and I learn something new about myself each day of the week. Some wisdom is found in the joyful moments. Yet others arrive in disguised challenges. Either way, every experience adds to the woman I’m growing into.
If you’re in a healing process of your own, have grace for yourself. Celebrate the small victories. Guard your peace without guilt. Trust your growth, even when it’s slow. And never stop getting to know the amazing person you were made to be.
Growth isn’t a matter of becoming somebody else.
It’s becoming more of who you’ve always been.
Thank you for taking the time to discuss this aspect of my journey with me. Just hope that words like these might encourage you to embrace your own. Until next time, continue growing, continue healing, and most importantly, continue choosing yourself. Your story is still being written, and I can’t wait to continue sharing mine.
